Referring to the article in the Observer (August 9) about the recovery of HMS Hood’s bell, in my capacity as vice-chairman I wish to confirm the support of the HMS Hood Association, in particular of the few veterans of which I am one, having served in the ship as a midshipman in 1938-39.
I should add that prior to his death in 2008, Ted Briggs, one of the three survivors and a former president of this association, was also supportive, subject to there being no disturbance to the wreck which is the grave of the 1,415 members of the ship’s company who died on that tragic day, May 24, 1941.
It is also worthy of note that the Bismarck suffered the same fate after being inflicted massive damage by units of the Home Fleet three days later on May 27, 1941.
The discovery of the wreck was 11 years ago in 2001, not 2011 as mentioned in the article.
We wish David Mearns all success in his difficult and important mission.
