Free school not free

REGARDING free schools, I cannot rejoice at a decision which will take money away from an education budget that should benefit everyone the privileged few.

It could also have disastrous results for existing local schools as, if it attracts pupils from them, it could lead to the closure of classes and the dismissing of teachers.

What a pity such energy could not be put into strengthening existing provision for everyone’s benefit. Hopefully, as with so many promises made by this government, a suitable site for the school will not be found, though some of us can still remember coping with prefabricated classrooms. Would they be an acceptable solution? Yes, if principle and not place really matters!
