LETTERS: A great year for Pram Race

ON behalf of our president, Derek Bell, and my hardworking committee, may I, through your excellent and supportive local paper, thank all those volunteers and regular helpers for the Pagham Pram Race.

The sponsors, including KIA, TMS Sound Systems, Kennedy, S Agricultural Contractors (Rostrum), St John Ambulance, Community Sergeant Chris Pipkin, PCSO Bill Prior, for assistance with various road closure orders, including WSCC highways and ADC.

Many thanks are also due to the publicans at the Bear Inn, The Lamb Inn and King’s Beach, who provide the competitors with beers over the three-mile course.

Bognor Hotham Rotary Club, West Downs search team and many individuals who provide marshalling for the traffic junctions, the spectators and competitors.

This year, in the street bucket collection, in spite of continuing economic difficulties, the amazingly generous people of Pagham village and surrounds broke all records to date, in the sum of £2,075.56.

Further donations from race entrants of £461.36 brought the total to £2,536.92 on the day.

The additional activities, including our popular horse race and bingo nights have this year, so far, allowed the committee to distribute in excess of £7,600, with a further £500 awaiting a proposed recipient, subject to conditions being met.

Grand total £8,100 distributed to local community. Our best ever, thank you all.

This year’s race was held in memoriam of Geoffrey John Rowe Evans, an early and much distinguished committee member. He served us well for more than 40 years. He passed away on August 31 last year and will be greatly missed by us all.

A privately-funded memorial cup is being arranged in his memory.

Finally, we are always open to new ideas and offers of help. In particular, assistance with managing our accounts, secretarial assistance and the committee. If you are interested, get in touch with the chairman on 07775 664286 for further details or offers of sponsorship.
