A substantial early-twentieth-century house set in mature, south-facing grounds by a private lane has been a very happy home for three generations of family living under one roof.

Located in a leafy rural spot just a stone’s throw from Chichester, Linden Lodge was built a century ago, before being extended first in 1960 and then again over the last decade.

The vendor said this adaptable home is ideal for an extended family and those in search of semi-rural peace and quiet.

He said: “I think the key features are the privacy and the large garden – we’ve got just under an acre of garden surrounded by trees.

“Linden Lodge has made a marvellous home for a whole variety of families – we’ve lived here for ten years and our children have grown up here.”

The vendor said the house was originally extended to make a home for his wife’s mother, who for three years lived in a private annexe, connected to the main house by just one door.

“It’s now home for one of our sons who got married last summer.

“We also had a variety of Australian cousins living here for a while, so we could accommodate them as well.

“There’s lots of space and lots of privacy – small people can hide from each other.”

Indeed, with almost an acre of garden, the family’s seven-strong collection of beagles have plenty of space in which to run about, in addition to a number of footpaths leading straight from the house into the countryside.

The garden is bordered with plenty of mature oak trees, but also boasts a fig tree, a dusting of well-established roses, a garden workshop, a greenhouse and a vegetable garden.

The very large hot-tub is a year-round treat, according to the family.

“It’s big enough for ten people and very relaxing.

“We sit in it at Christmas – you just have to have frozen champagne glasses for that!”

The vendor said he thought the house would be ideal for growing-up families with parents and/or children living separately.

“There are three independent living zones, including the flat, which we used to rent out; a two-bedroom, totally private annexe designed for the elderly with wide doorways and other features; and a four-bedroom house with more than enough space for a family.

“It’s a fun place to be.

“It’s a little bit different – it’s a great place to bring up an extended family and we think it is a model of how ‘vertical housing’ could be in future.”

Another plus is that the house is a few minutes’ ride into Chichester or onto the motorway, yet is ‘within walking distance of Tesco’ and has extensive car parking space serving the main house, annexe and apartment.

“Some of our children have gone to college here, which is a stone’s throw away.”

Above all, the vendor said he and his family would miss the sense of privacy and space.

“Whichever window you look out of, you look onto trees and gardens.”
