Landlord Richard Miller scooped the award on behalf of his team moments after the Chilgrove inn had already been named the South East Pub of the year.

'This feels amazing'

Speaking to event organisers, Miller revealed his delight at earning the title of best pub in the country.

'This feels amazing,' he revealed. 'We drive the team really hard and we demand a lot from them, so to be recognised because of them is brilliant. This award is for the team and all their hard work. I'm really proud. This award will be fantastic for business.'

Operations manager Fabien Garrigues revealed that the pub were expecting an upturn in trade following the award.

'It's obviously a good way to attract new customers because it's how people will find their next destination for a weekend away with their family and loved ones.

'Summertime is coming and it's a busy time of year, so we are going to need to find some extra staff quickly as now we are hopefully going to get lots of extra customers! We'd better be ready.'

High-end pub grub

This isn't the first time that the White Horse Inn has been recognised nationally - in 2015 the inviting gastropub was named 'best pub' at the GQ Food & Drink awards.

Set at the bottom of the picturesque South Downs, the team at the White Horse have prided themselves on delivering quality, locally sourced and - most importantly - tasty high-end pub grub.

Chilgrove wood pigeons, rabbits and trout all feature prominently on the menu, as do moreish cheeses produced at the nearby Goodwood estate.

As well as offering up delicious plates of food, the pub restaurant serves up a dizzying array of wines and cocktails.

Visitors are also welcome to stay at the pub's stylish and cosy, cottage Bed and Breakfast.
