Aldwick do their bit - but there's no promotion party

Aldwick's first and second XIs have finished their West Sussex Invitation League campaigns - and both will be in the same division next year after solid seasons. Here are their final-day reports.

Dome Mission v Aldwick

West Sussex Invitation League division three

Aldwick needed to gain seven more points than Chippingdale in their last game to finish second and achieve promotion to division two.

They comfortably beat Dome Mission by six wickets but Chippingdale also won, and Aldwick will have to give it another go next season.

Aldwick rolled over Dome Mission for just 128 with top bowling performances from Adam Robinson (3-21), Ollie Smith (2-30), Grant Wilson (2-19) and Amit Chauhan (2-17).

Robinson’s bowling has been one of the finds for Aldwick this year with good consistent bowling throughout. Only opener A Atish (37) offered any kind of resistance as the home team were eager to gain maximun points.

Chasing 129 for victory and possible promotion, Aldwick passed the winning line in the 33rd over.

Despite loosing opener Dean Stokes for a duck, Adam Rutter (52), with good support from Ryan Hicks (27) and Alex Cooper (28*) made easy meat of their target.

In the end, promotion was not achieved but skipper Joel Lodge can be proud of his troops who performed well in their first year in a higher division.

Aldwick II v Brighton Electricity II

Division seven

Aldwick seconds’ final league game against Brighton Electricity II did not have lot riding on it for either team - but it was an exciting contest with a close finish.

Good tight bowling from the Aldwick line-up restricted the visitors to 147 all out. First-change bowlers George Bingham (2-21) and Jonny Knapp (2-19) were soon among the wickets and Luke Spindler finished it off with three for 18. Top scorer for Electricity was T Haddock with 32.

The home side started well with opener Tom Hoare rattling up a well-made 42. After the good start, wickets began to fall too frequently, mainly because of the bowling of S Figg (4-35).

When last person Lara Johnson was out, Aldwick were just five runs short of victory.

Wilson’s team finished a respectable fourth in their division and show a lot of promise to go further next year.
