The Duke of Norfolk’s XI played Oxford University. Batting first, the Duke’s team amassed 375-1 off 50 overs with Australian batsman Jordan Silk passing 200 – the highest-ever individual score by a Duke’s XI batsman and the highest Duke’s XI score on the ground.

Meanwhile, the Sussex Cricket Festival will, for this year, be titled The Arundel Festival of Cricket presented by Irwin Mitchell. The festival begins on June 22 with a four-day match against Northamptonshire and finishes on June 26 with a T20 game versus Gloucestershire.

The ground will hold a South of England cricket tournament for the deaf, a local schools’ festival, T20 national independent schools finals and national ECB finals including the county second XI T20 and the three-day U17 county championship final.

There will, of course, be the traditional Duke of Norfolk’s XI matches against clubs such as the MCC and Combined Services, while Sir Tim Rice will be hosting his annual Heartaches match at the Castle in September.

Sussex Women will play Kent and Middlesex women in a triangular T20 which will involve many England players, including Charlotte Edwards and Sarah Taylor.

There has also much foundation activity at the ground, including a three-day visit from the Joseph Clarke School for the Visually Impaired in East London. In fact, the Foundation has a packed programme organised for the summer with children from London’s boroughs visiting during the holidays as well as numerous days set aside for youngsters with a variety of special needs.

James Rufey, executive secretary, said: “It’s been a wonderful start to the year. There is much more to come and the variety of cricket - charitable and corporate - is something matched by very few cricketing organisations.

“Of course, we are much looking forward to the Sussex Festival and it is marvellous that Irwin Mitchell are supporting this. We are also delighted that our newly-refurbished pavilion and bar are proving so popular with our many members and visitors alike.”
