Bognor trampoline team leap to more national success

DRAGONFLYERS trampolinists from Bognor travelled to Alton to compete against the region's best for medals and a place in the southern regional team.

They needed to finish in the top two places in the region and obtain national qualification scores for their age and category and pass a strenuous range and conditioning test.

The Flyers rose to the challenge with all 13 excelling in their strength and flexibility, 11 exceeding the national trampoline qualifying scores and eight making the top two in their event to gain southern team selection.

They will head to Birmingham in May to compete against other regional teams from across the UK.

They are Toby Smith (1st), Anya Johnstone/Taylor Cleall (joint 1st), Ellie Morton (1st), Izzy Hauxwell (1st), Libby Morton (2nd), Alice Chapman (2nd), Sofia Kalnicenko (2nd), and reserve Lucy Hijmans.

Lana Collyer did well but fell just one position outside selection.

Flyers yet again have the most participants in the regional team and the highest-ranked and highest-level trampolinists – this despite the club being one of the smallest in the south.

Dragonflyers are extremely proud of the performance of all their trampolinists at Alton. The pressure was intense, the standard of opposition high, the accuracy of performers pinpoint – yet Flyers held their nerve and performed powerful, graceful, precise routines, maintaining their status and ranking at the top of the region – proving they belong at national level.

Phillipe Newton-Young is celebrating another gold medal.

It came in Gillingham, Kent, in the south-east gymnastics trampoline NDP competition and his friend Morgan Pullen also won gold.

The pair are both members of Flitecrew Trampoline Club based in Crawley and Horsham and are the club’s only boys.

A total of 282 performers from 14 different clubs participated in Gillingham.

Medals was awarded to the top three at the end of each flight.

Philippe thanked his coaches Laurel Kennedy and Lisa Temple and his main sponsor Kevin Holland, who runs a funeral firm in Bognor.

He has also had a lot of support from all his friends, his school St Philip Howard and his family.
