Bowls: Bognor beat the neighbours ... mixed week for Chichester

Bognor won 64-39 in an away match against Hotham. A three-rink mixed triples clash brought two rinks for Bognor, one for Hotham.

A rainy day in Worthing saw Bognor take on Homefield Park in a four-rink mixed fours. The rinks were shared 2-2 with a shot score of 75-71 to Homefield Park.

A hard-fought but friendly match at Waterloo Square ended in Crablands coming out on top by just two points, 103-101, sharing two rinks each.

A Crablands team lost the friendly 24-16.

A five-rink mixed triples match against RAFA saw Bognor emerge as 89-62 winners winning three rinks to two.

CHICHESTER

Chichester suffered mixed fortunes when their teams were involved in Littlehampton Gazette League matches and national competitions.

In the league, the B team continued their fine run of form with a third sucessive eight-points-to-two win at home to Maltravers, winning overall 87-85.

This put them second in division three, three points behind Field Place but with a game in hand.

Chichester A were also involved in a tight game when they entertained East Preston. The visitors held the lead from the start winning 74-72 to leave Chichester with just four points.

In the national competitions, Chichester B travelled to Tarring Priory for the National Club Two Fours and, in another entertaining game, Chichester lost out by four shots.

The most exciting game involved Chichester A at Worthing Pavilion A in the National Top Club.

With Chichester winning the four-wood singles and the triples and Worthing taking the two-wood singles and the pairs, the match stood at 2-2 with just the fours left to finish - and after 21 ends the score was 16-16 so they had to play an extra end to decide the winner.

Chichester were one shot down but captain Simon Tooley took the shot with the last bowl of the game to secure a dramatic victory for Chichester.

Lancing Ladies 59 Chichester Ladies 79

Chichester Ladies travelled to Lancing for the first round of the Sussex Top Club competition, winning three of the four disciplines and the match by 20 shots.

Witterings men played their second Littlehampton Gazette League match of the season against East Preston B. Each team won on two rinks and the visitors won overall by six shots. Witterings earned four points.

Witterings Ladies played their first C&M League match of the season at Petworth. Witterings won on one rink, drew on the other and won overall by 14 shots to gain five points.

On a difficult green that had just been fertilised Southbourne came away with no BM League points. But an enjoyable evening was had.

Lavant SMBC’s club competitions were held throughout the season.

Two memorial trophies are contested – the Martin (open drawn singles) and the Tony Conway (open drawn pairs).

In the Martin Trophy, Peter Whale beat Peter Winter. A first-round losers’ trophy was awarded to Clare Beardmore, who beat Muriel Winter.

For the Conway Trophy Caroline Martin and Peter Whale beat Shelagh Lillywhite and John Simms.

In the ladies’ singles Jackie Lee beat Jean Conway. In the men’s singles Peter Whale defeated Rob Peirce.

The club pairs winners were Tony Bleach and Peter Winter, who beat Shelagh Lillywhite and John Simms.

A play-off to become overall club champion was won by Peter Whale, who will represent the club in the Sussex champion of champions event.

NYETIMBER

Nyetimber entertained West Wittering for a friendly and had a good evening, winning on two mats but losing by two points on the third.
