Bowls: Chichester ladies are in the Zone

The Zone Final of the Top Club Competition between Pagham and Chichester ladies was played at Pagham. Chichester won on three out of four disciplines to get through with a 75-71 victory.

Chichester were edged out of the Midhurst Cup in a semi-final defeat to Midhurst. Chichester’s home and away teams both lost by eight shots giving Midhurst overall victory by 16 shots.

On a hot afternoon, Witterings men entertained Norfolk. The result was a disappointment after Witterings lost heavily on one rink. The other game was a draw.

Crablands ladies earned six points in the heat at Lancing.

At home against Pagham, Crablands again took maximum points.

Three Crablands triples travelled to Worthing Beach House Park for the benevolent triples with the trio of C Lewendon, S Jones and C Bowles winning twice to go forward to the quarter, semi and final at Henfield on August 23.

Crablands visited RAFA for a friendly and won 70-68.

Bognor played Headley in the semi-final of the Midhurst Cup, and despite losing on both rinks at home, they won on both rinks away with a final score of 65-61. They play the hosts Midhurst in the final on August 6.

Bognor men’s B team played Middleton in the West Sussex League division three. John Edwards’ rink were 13-1 down at nine ends and had a great comeback to draw. Bognor won on the other three rinks for a 90-66 win and nine points.

A men’s league game at home to Southbourne in division one of the West Sussex League was lost 104-54.

Two Pagham mixed triples favced The Beavers partially-sighted bowlers. In warm sunshine, the Beavers won.

Four mixed triples faced Little Spain but Pagham lost87-46.

Playing at home to Bognor B in the West Sussex Bowls League, Middleton men were leading in two games with just one end to play in each. But Bognor showed why they are unbeaten this season by winning one of these games and drawing the other.

Petworth enjoyed a friendly and a league game but results did not go their way.

A friendly mixed triples team travelled to Graffham and had trouble adjusting to the heavy grass rink, so different from Petworth’s home carpet.

On Saturday Bognor, the top league team, beat Petworth on three rinks out of four and overall by 83-57. Bognor took eight points, Petworth two.

FITTLEWORTH

A triples competition was the format for the Fines Shield.

Winners were Arthur Ellcome, Sue Judd and Sheila Allen. Runners-up were Nancy Goodyer, Mike Ryan and Bernard Adsett.

Joan Fines donated a nice selection of raffle prizes, the proceeds going to the club.
