Bowls: West Sussex get better of Kent visitors

West Sussex B defeated Kent in a home friendly.

Kent are always strong opposition and West Sussex were looking for an improved performance after a bad loss in Kent earlier in the season.

They started well taking six points in the first session and with three points in the second West Sussex led 9-7 at lunch.

The afternoon continued in a similar way with six points from the third session plus the bonus points in singles and pairs leaving them needing just one win in the last session.

They improved on the morning result with two wins for a final very satisfying victory overall by 23-17.

In the singles The Martlets’ Freddie Kaucher won 15-14 and 12-9. In the pairs Lavant’s Jackie Lee and Bognor’s Pam Andrews lost 14-12 and won 18-16, while Bognor’s Stella Singleton and Clive Andrews won 23-6 and lost 12-10.

In the triples Infinity’s Denise Kirby lost 11-8 and 14-6 whilst Bognor’s Betty Williams drew 12-12 and won 12-11.

And in the fours Bognor’s David Stansmore and Reg Hatch with Crablands’ Rod Shambrook lost 16-10 and won 17-8 while Crablands Mollie Back won 11-9 and lost 15-8.

LAVANT

Lavant 35 Chilgrove 25

This was the first leg of the Golden Bowl trophy, an 18-end triples competition. The scores were pretty even until the last few ends, Lavant pulling ahead to win on both mats.

Green kept up a good scoring rate on both mats to win.

Lavant B 37 Ashington Red 31

A league KO Cup match saw Lavant lead all the way on mat one but fail to score the final four ends. Ashington were one shot down on the last end but came through to win by two shots.

On mat two, from a good start, Lavant pushed forward and won by eight shots to clinch the match.

On mat one, Lavant scored on only eight ends, losing by 17 shots. Lavant’s mat two turned the match around scoring well all the way to win by 12 shots. Lavant won the friendly.

Lavant Green 33 Southbourne Rovers 41

On mat one, Green got over a slow start to be one shot up at halfway – and pushed on and won by four shots.

On two, scores were level halfway but Rovers upped their game to win by 12 shots.

Red took six ends on mat one, C&P taking ten ends with single shots and taking the last few ends with four shots on the final end to win by 11 shots.

But on mat two, Red triumphed by taking 18 ends, smothering C&P and winning by 23 shots.

Lavant Green 29 Walberton 47

After a good start on mat one, Green lost their way with scores level at end 15. Green were one shot down for the last end but three shots gave them a win.

Mat two saw no score from Green until end 12. Walberton scored well all the way and won by 20 shots. Lavant won the friendly.

ARUN

Arun ladies entertained Sutton and came out winners on all rinks.

Arun won their home game against Worthing Pavilion – and are firmly knocking on the door of Adur for second place in division one of the County League after completing the double over Grattons.

Arun took five points for the overall win and one each for the wins on five rinks.

Southbourne Rangers lost away to Horley Hawks in county division two of the West Sussex Winter League. Southbourne lost on both mats and by 18 shots overall. Both mats were very close with five ends to play.

Scores: Audrey Bull, Mark Soper, Robin Armstrong & Dave Alner (s) lost 22-14; Karen Alner, John Hardy, Andy Smith & Rodney Bull (s) lost 21-11.

Bognor Goodwoods Silver 37 Southbourne Rovers 33

Southbourne Rovers lost at Bognor in south-west zone division two of the Winter League against Bognor Goodwoods Silver. Each team won on one mat and Southbourne narrowly lost overall by four shots to earn two points.

NYETIMBER

Nyetimber Lions hosted Norfolk Cubs in a league match and earned two points.

Scores: Alan Crew, George Rump, Barbara Crew, and Cyril Searle lost 29-16; Lyndon Griffiths, Aileen Donaldson, Derek Young and Nigel Plummer won 26-20; (friendly): Stuart Ridgewell, Kathy Young, Pat Mussell and Una Purnell lost 32-12.
