Bullet Bullen can be boxing star of future
St Gerards Amateur Boxing club travelled to Gosport ABC to give junior Harrison '˜Bullet' Bullen his first real contest.
The 11-year-old was set up for three 90-second rounds against home-club boxer Ashraf Mohammed, also 11 and having his first bout.
The pair, both weighing in at 49kg, had met at St Gerards’ dinner show in a skills contest in February.
Trainee coach Chris James, aka The Flamboyant One, said the first round was a cracker with both lads going at it like hammer and tongs, neither willing to give way.
James said: “In the second we told Harrison he had to up the ante and throw more long shots as when he was close to Ashraf it was getting too messy with no scoring points.
“He did just that with some lovely shots to the head and body. With Ashraf playing his own part as well, it was with another close round, both of them tiring towards the end.
“In the last round we told Harrison to carry on with long jabs and right-hand crosses, to push forward and keep it long, and he did.
“The round was captivating, with both lads giving their all. Ashraf ran out of steam with about 30 seconds to go and Harrison pummelled forward with great gusto, closing the round off with a galliant efffort.
“Harrison was given a close points decision and was very pleased – as were the club – with his first real taste of competitive boxing.”
Tyler Aldridge has completed the Standard Award from the GB National Boxing Awards.
For the award, the seven-year-old from Bognor demonstrated good footwork, moving in all directions, defences to a lead hand and a rear hand to head and body, party, block, lean back and push away.
Shadow boxing and padwork were also included.
To complete the award he also answered questions on the rules of amateur boxing and leading a healthy lifestyle.
Next for him will be the bronze award.
