Couzens came up short in his quest to dethrone Wadi Camacho for the Southern Area cruiserweight title in London.

The 31-year-old was pulled out by his corner at the end of the sixth of an entertaining match-up.

Couzens had his moments where he threatened to spring a shock in the first two rounds.

And he showed he could withstand the power Camacho brought to the table.

But, in the end, the Titchfield battler’s gameness proved his undoing as he began to ship too much punishment.

The fifth and six proved torrid affairs for him, but, in customary fashion, Couzens continued to come forward.

His corner, however, with trainers Steve Tyrell and Glen Bradley present, took the correct decision to pull their man out.

Couzens’ bravery certainly won hearts and minds at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.

The 7-10-2 man admitted he neglected his boxing skills but felt he had an opportunity to take Camacho out early on.

Couzens said: ‘It was a decent performance but I should have boxed more.

‘I hurt him in the first and second rounds.

‘I caught him with a right which wobbled him a bit so I went for him but couldn’t land the next punch.

‘In the fifth and the sixth he started to get to me.

‘He landed some uppercuts which would have taken most people out, but I wasn’t going to go down.

‘My corner said at the end of the fifth they weren’t going to let me take more of those punches.

‘It was more of the same in the next round, so they pulled me out.

‘I wanted to carry on but I respect my corner’s decision.

‘I definitely hurt him and took his best shots.

‘Hopefully people enjoyed it and I gave them the entertainment they wanted to see.’

A match-up with Leigh Park’s Biola Kudus is now a natural for Couzens.

Both men have stated they are keen to take the fight later this year. And Couzens insisted it’s a contest he’s still keen to have.

He said: Everyone’s pushing for it and that’s fine by me.

‘I was one of the only people willing to fight Camacho at our level, so Biola’s no problem.

‘It looks like Camacho’s moving on and vacating his title. So if we get it on for the Southern Area or another belt that’s good for me. It’s a winnable fight.’
