Griffiths searching for first pro win in Portsmouth

LIAM GRIFFITHS expects to chalk up his first victory as a professional boxer in Portsmouth on Saturday.

Bognor’s travel-anywhere orthodox stylist journeyed up to Blackpool for his debut and drew praise from Ricky Hatton for his plucky performance in defeat to hot prospect Adam Little.

The 24-year-old welterweight then went to the Elephant & Castle in London on two days’ notice where he was beaten by Lee Owen.

He was asleep in the car on his way to a weekend of sparring in Manchester when he was woken and offered a fight with Tom Christian in Liverpool just three hours later which also saw him on the wrong end of a points decision.

But Griffiths remains full of confidence as he makes the short trip down the A27 to the Liquid Fury show in Portsmouth where he faces West Ham’s Johnny Greaves.

The London southpaw has been in the ring with former world champion Gavin Rees and domestic title-holders Lee Purdy, Liam Walsh, Lee Selby, Gavin Sykes and the unbeaten Tyrone Nurse.

Griffiths said: “Three straight defeats is not how I envisaged starting my pro career but I’m getting regular work because I’m dependable and durable with something to offer.

“I was fairly beaten in the first fight and the other two were very good learning experiences where I have proved my toughness.

“I won’t pick easy options, I will take on anyone, anywhere.”

Griffiths has a great record in Portsmouth, winning eight and drawing one with just a contentious defeat as an amateur with Portsmouth Stacey ABC and as a semi-pro.

He added: “I respect Johnny Greaves, he’s a tough customer but I have been training very hard at VK’s Gym in Bognor and I’m determined to gain that first win.

“I have a lot of supporters travelling to Pompey and promising to raise the roof – and I won’t let them down.”

Griffiths has been boosted by fresh sponsorship from A1 Barbers in Pagham as well as continued sponsorsjip VKs and Muscle Fury.
