Buick back in big-time at Goodwood

William Buick and Charlie Appleby may have been out of luck in the Oaks at Epsom as Goodwood winner Skiffle finished fifth in the big race.

But they were back in business on the Downs hours later as they teamed up for a Godolphin double in the first in this year’s series of Three Friday Nights fixtures at Goodwood.

Skiffle had been supplemented for the classic at Epsom after winning Goodwood’s Height of Fashion Stakes in impressive fashion a fortnight earlier, but was out of the picture as Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore took the prize with odds-on favourite Minding.

Less than two and a half hours later, though, Buick – who had four winners on one day at the track’s May Festival – was guiding the two-year-old Godolphin prospect Boynton home in the six-furlong Breeders Backing Racing EBF Novice Stakes, just edging out Pat Dobbs on Mutawatheb.

Buick ended the night by completing a double and it was another one for Godolphin and Appleby as 11/4 starter Manaboo took the Sister Bliss Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

Buick shared the Goodwood limelight with another famous racing name - Nicholls. Not champion jumps trainer Paul, but his daughter Megan, now an apprentice rider, who battled brilliantly to guide the Charlie Mann runner Sureness (11/2) first over the line in the Russian Original Standard Stakes.

The meeting began with Serena Brotherton claiming the ROA/Racing Post Owners Jackpot Amateur Riders’ Stakes on the Sylvester Kirk-trained 11/2 shot Pink Ribbon, with our pick China Girl coming in third at 20/1.

Kachess (5/2) was a clear winner of the Derries Lower Novice Stakes (In Memory Of Fred And Norma Dudley) under Richard Kingscote for trainer Tom Dascombe, while David Probert rode another 5/2 contender, Dancing Star, to victory in the EBF Stallions Breeding Winners Fillies’ Stakes for Andrew Balding.

After the racing, the crowd were entertained by a superb DJ set by Sister Bliss, best known for her work as part of Faithless.

The second and third in this year’s Three Friday Nights series - on June 10 and 17 - feature Mista Jam and Basement Jaxx. The latter is a sell-out but tickets are still available for next week.
