Chichester tennis stars shine at club's tournament

Chichester Racquets and Fitness Club hosted an LTA south-east junior tour nine-and-under event.

This grade-five boys’ singles event was the latest tennis tournament staged in the club’s dome during the winter competition season.

Half the 12 competitors were from the Chichester club.

The tournament was organised using round-robin qualifying rounds which progressed to a compass draw. This method gave everyone five matches, with each match being best of three tie-breaks to seven points, with two points clear.

Third place and a bronze medal went to Billy Johnson (Horsham) who beat Joseph Robinson (Chichester), 11-13, 7-5, 7-5.

Fred Whitby (Chichester) was runner-up and collected the silver medal. He lost in the final to Ross Wilson (Chichester) 7-5, 4-7, 7-5 who collected the gold medal.

All three Chichester semi-finalists play their tennis at Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club and receive coaching at Chichester Tennis Academy.

Competition organiser and referee Peter Cook said: “There was an incredible effort made by all the competitors, with tennis of an extremely high standard and played with an excellent spirit.

“It was very encouraging to watch so many of our Chichester players, who receive their coaching with the Chichester Tennis Academy, showing such promise and enthusiasm on the courts.

“For some of the Chichester contingency it was their first experience of tournament play and they all competed extremely well and, to boast three out of four semi-finalists is a fantastic achievement.”
