West Wittering under-14s went into their last league match of the season against Worthing Chips knowing a win would probably cement their place as runners-up in the league.

They were without regulars White, Bradbury and Fitzgerald. Harry Standing took on the captain’s role and decided to bat first.

It looked a good decision as openers Aaron Newman and Caddy put on 30 before Newman was bowled for 17. Caddy went on to 26 before retiring, and this seemed to upset the Wittering composure and they lost Smith, Alex Caddy and Finch cheaply.

Tongue and Standing steadied things before Tongue was well caught by one of the excellent girls representing Worthing. Standing remained unbeaten on 15 as Wittering reached a total of 90, but with only five wickets lost.

Worthing had the worst possible start with Aaron Newman steaming in with great pace to bowl Bourne after only five balls, Smith clean-bowled Edgoose for a gutsy 12, and Standing had Wadey brilliantly caught by young Sam Caddy, also for 12.

Saunders went after the Wittering bowlers and retired on 26, but the Wittering bowlers cleaned up the remaining batsman with an aggressive spell and some brilliant work in the field.

Sam Caddy took two further catches, one from his brother Alex’s bowling, and one off skipper Standing. Newman bowled the final batsman and West Wittering has squeezed home to win by a mere three runs.

It was a good season and West wittering should finish runners-up.
