Cormorants break Sussex swim record
Chichester Cormorants' day of competition at the 2016 European Masters swimming championships began at 6am.
The team of Darren Sims, Kerrin Cruttenden, Neil Bradfield and Paul Mason were at the London Aquatic Centre to represent the club.
All but Bradfield took part in the 200m freestyle heats and put in good displays.
Highlights included Cruttenden’s charging first length, Mason’s flying last length, and Sims’ perfectly-paced swim. Each of the Cormorants was competitive in their age group.
In the 50m breaststroke, Mason won his heat in the quickest time of the day so far. It was several heats before faster swimmers pushed him down the list, and he ended 37th of 153 swimmers.
Sims’ masterclass of starts, turns and underwater phases lit up the 100m butterfly and put him well ahead of his entry time. He was finally ranked 25th of 75 swimmers in a notably-strong field.
The main reason the team were there was the the 4x50m freestyle relay.
Bradfield had sat through the whole day before his blistering length of the Olympic pool. He claims he’s now hung up his Speedos in favour of triathlon – if this was his swansong in the race pool, he left it on a high.
Strong contributions from the whole team gave a finish time of 1.50.31, and a respectable 21st place among 82 entrants in the age category.
The Sussex ASA have confirmed that the four broke the existing county record which is an amazing result.
