Crablands bowlers share out the honours - as outdoor season's start looms

Monday League winners were Team C – skip Joyce Heritage, Brian Baxendell, Jill Wallington, Jim Saunders, Vera Ashby and Chris Bond.

Wednesday League winners were Team J – Joan Taylor (skip), Ron Coombes, Iris Brown, Colin Garland, Les Dray, Jean Tolhurst, Doug Jones and Rose Colton.

The Friday League was won by Team V – Brian Berry (skip), Stevie Brooks, Joyce Able, John Harman, Iris Brown and Don Jonas.

A spoons drive and fun day competition was won by Team E – Stevie Brooks, Barbara Bond and Charlie Threlkeld. The losing group were Team F, Sheila Plaistow, Lew Lewenden and Vera Ashby.

Refreshments were provided by Joyce Abel and Sandra Marney.

The Crablands short mat group thanked Sylvia Compton and Ron Osborn for their efforts and achievements this year.

ARUN

Arun 115 Croydon 84

Arun ladies had an enjoyable day at Croydon. Very good bowling by Arun gave them a 31-shot win.

Hunston

Hunston lost by 32-29 at West Wittering and just can’t seem to win away from home.

CARPET BOWLS

Only six months since its founding, the Westbourne Carpet Bowls Club entered a team for the first time in the West Sussex Carpet Bowls Association annual open competition at the Selsey Centre.

Twenty teams entered from the Birdham, Bosham, Mundham, Selsey, Westbourne and Willowhale clubs and the four mats were in use for five-and-a-half hours.

The Westbourne team comprised Christine Adsett, Rona Musker and William Musker. Though no prizes were won, Westbourne team did well - even when facing teams with many years’ experience.

All thoroughly enjoyed the event and it has been agreed to exchange visits over the coming season with the other clubs.

Carpet Bowls is played with smaller and lighter bowls and with a shorter mat and offers gentle exercise plus keen competitive action. The Westbourne members meet most Tuesdays from 7.30pm at the club in River Street.

OUTDOOR BOWLS

Aldingbourne Bowls Club will be holding their open fun day on Sunday, April 24 from 11am, marking the start of the season on the new all-weather surface.

Visitors will be able to try their hand at target bowls, bowls for holes or jack-in-the-box for fun.

For those who are interested in the more serious side of bowls, tuition will be available.

The club are 400 yards north of the level crossing on the A29 at Woodgate in the community centre at Olivers Meadow.
