After a week off Eastergate put in their best performance of the season as they hammered Wisborough Green.

Eastergate elected to bat and skipper Jack Stannard opened with Josh Cole but Cole went early off the bowling of Raj Maru, the former Hampshire bowler.

Youngster Nick Smith looked in fine form following his 50 and 4 wickets for Sussex under-17s. Smith whacked a very quick 56 including some huge hits before he was removed lbw by Byron Napper.

Napper picked up the wicket of Justin Poyser and Eastergate were 121-3. Chris Brittain built a partnership with Stannard who had made his way to 50.

Brittain and Stannard, who have played together through their colts days, kept the scoreboard ticking. Stannard was caught behind for 67 and Maru picked up two more quick wickets.

Brittain went through to his 50 while building another partnership with younger Stannard (Tom) who quickly hit three big sixes. Tom Stannard finished 29 not out and Brittain 54 not out as Eastergate ended on 242-6.

In the Wisborough reply, Tom Stannard led from the front with two wickets including the dangerous Napper for a duck. Wisborough were three for three as Pete Smith bowled Wisborough captain James Self for one with a great in-swinger.

Pete Smith took two more and this left Wisbourough 29 for five.

Tim Dodd went about rebuilding the innings with Chris Francis before Eastergate skipper turned to MoM Nick Smith.

He had to bowl spin because of his Sussex commitments in the week and he removed Francis for 23 and then took four more wickets to leave him with figures of 5-14.

Wisborough were all out for 106 leaving Eastergate with a win of 136 runs.

The 30 points took Eastergate up to third in the league. This Saturday they host their annual charity game, with a T20 cup game against Wisborough on Sunday.

Aldwick v Brighton & Hove

Division two

Aldwick bounced back to winning ways with a much-needed victory over Brighton & Hove III by four wickets in a solid all-round performance.

Batting first, Brighton started well with the Marks brothers, David (42) and Tim (22), putting on 32 runs for the first wicket before Tim became the first of Adam Robinson’s three victims (3-38) of the visitors’ innings.

Further steady batting pushed the score to 65-2 and then 110-3 and, with Josh Barnes (50) making a half century, things looked promising for Brighton.

However, Keelan Belcher (3-34) and John Young (3-20) had over ideas and ripped though the middle to lower order taking wickets at ease and restricting the visitors to a below-par 187 all out in the 41st over.

Aldwick had 53 overs to reach their target and bank a valuable 30 points.

The veritable highlight of the innings was a solid 76 from Scott Bingham and with worthy support from Adam Rutter (23) and Alex Cooper (20), victory was achieved in the 50th over by four wickets. Pick of the Brighton’s bowling attack was Jake Comaschi with 2-41.

Aldwick will be determined to continue in the same victorious manner this week away to East Preston.

The seconds are back in action this weekend – after a week off – at home to Chichester Priory Park III.

Selsey v Worthing Chippingdale

Division two

Selsey entertained the leaders and secured a winning draw with a fine all-round display.

They elected to bat and a good opening partnership between Tim Fewster (34) and James Amis (29) settled them.

Nic Nolan struck 51 and Pete Horner 40* while Josh Stocks 29 and Luke Cawte 12* helped Selsey make a competitive 225-8.

In reply tight bowling from Tom Cripps keep the run rate in check. Josh Stocks struck with an early wicket but in his fifth over went down injured, and he is out for the season.

Selsey had to field with ten men but this didn’t deter a fine effort. Josh Bourne (32) and Aylen (31) got starts but didn’t move on to big scores as a super spell from Tom Amis (4-47) swung the match in Selsey’s favour.

Pete Horner (2-48) and Jo Clarke (1-15) aided the push but S Martyn with 49 not our saw Chipps to a losing draw. Selsey travel to Broadbridge Heath on Saturday.

Scaynes Hill v West Wittering

Division three

West Wittering elected to bat. Jonathan Hall (3-71) got Liam Bates to nick one behind without scoring but Mark Taylor (32) and Gareth Lendrum (39) set about rebuilding the Wittering innings.

Lendrum struck three massive sixes into the adjacent field before Andrew Parsons (3-60) and Joe Gallon (2-63) took three quick wickets to put Wittering in bother.

Carl Tupper (22) and James Staight (25) began the rebuild, but Parsons got Tupper to feather one behind to the keeper. Staight followed after slashing one to point and Wittering were 162 for seven.

The Wittering tail needed to wag and Luke Short (35), Alex Salmon (25) and Matt Jewiss (22) took the total to 263-9 declared.

In reply, Nick Wright (14) was trapped lbw trying to flick Harry Staight (3-45) to the mid-wicket boundary. George Parker (18) followed. He drilled a straight drive to Liam Bates at mid-off and though he dropped an easy chance, as Parker scampered through for a single Bates threw down the stumps for a superb run-out.

Ben Ellis (23) and Rob Green (33) began to get the Scaynes Hill total moving but a series of quick wickets from Joe Pink (1-17), James Staight (2-18) and Carl Tupper (1-25) reduced Scaynes Hill to 135-6.

Stout defence from Alan Ridgewell (20) and Stephen Hoadley (10) took Scaynes Hill close to a draw. Andrew Priest (1-8) removed Hoadley in the penultimate over but Wittering had to settle for a winning draw and 18 points, leaving them second with a game in hand.

The Felpham Oval played host to Chippingdale CC in the first round proper of the League T20 Cup.

Despite two wickets apiece for Aldwick’s Adam Robinson (2-24), Keelan Belcher (2-20) and Ian Guppy (2-19) the visitors pushed on to a healthy final total of 137-8. The centrepiece of the innings was Alex Wood (42) and Stephen Chimhamhiwa’s (37) match-winning partnership.

All started well for Aldwick with opener Alex Cooper racing to 40 but after the promising start it was all downhill as only Ryan Purvis (12) and Ian Guppy (12*) made double figures as the home side finished 39 runs short.

In a three-over spell Josh Bourne took 4-6 (including a hat-trick) which was the main reason Aldwick lost their last five wickets for just one run.

Aldwick will now feature in the Plate preliminary round.

Bognor 3rd XI v Chichester Priory Park 4th XI

Division ten west

At Oaklands Park, Chichester won the toss and elected to bat on a greenish wicket. This didn’t deter skipper Graham Bennison (33) and Will Parker (26), who batted with minimal fuss before burly seamer Jon Whitewood had Bennison well-caught by Dan Winslow.

Whitewood accounted for Steve Price to finish with two for 41 before skipper John Hooker (2-44) snared Steve Parker and Rich Creswick to tighten the game a little. A late salvo from Roger Smith with a bustling 45 saw Chichester up to 206 for six.

Bognor’s reply began briskly as Babs Ahmed was all wristy panache as the all-rounder made an excellent maiden hundred for Bognor, retiring on 106.

However, Chichester came back into the game as leg-spinner Viren Chudasams (2-35), seamer Francis Gee (2-24) and Sam Price (2-33) brought the game back in the balance.

However, despite a late flurry from Whitewood with 22, Chichester bowled out Bognor for 195, winning by 11 runs.
