Batting first against Findon, Bognor lost Ryan Maskell second ball, but rebuilt through Nick Ballamy (41), supported by the middle order.

Findon took regular wickets to leave Bognor 98-6, but useful lower order contributions from Charlie Jays and Josh Seward took the total to a marginally below-par 126-7.

Where Bognor had looked tentative with the bat however, they were electric with the ball and in the field, with Josh Sargeant (4-11) blowing open the top order in the powerplay.

With economic bowling from Bognor’s spinners and some excellent catching, Findon were comfortably dismissed for 89, with Ashmore finishing with 3-17.

Bognor immediately played in the second round, versus Slinfold, and Ballamy was dismissed early.

Slinfold bowled tightly, limiting the scoring of Maskell and Ashmore, and when the latter was dismissed for 47, Bognor were again looking to the lower order. A late flurry from Seward and Mike Harris helped by chaotic fielding saw Bognor put 137-6 on the board.

Harris (2-14) took the initiative with the ball and Slinfold were three down early.

The away side never recovered, with Sam Adams picking up three wickets in the middle overs, and some more good catching, coupled with two run outs, saw Slinfold bowled out for 100. Bognor take on Horsham Trinity in the third round.

Middleton cruised to a seven-wicket win over Worthing. Tommy Davies and Sean Heather took three wickets apiece as Worthing were bowled out for 68. Harry Hovey hit 56 not out in the reply.

Ben Lucking (76 not out) and Charlie Davies (63) were the stars of the show as West Chiltington (198-3) beat Chichester PP by 53 runs.

Danny Botham and Danny Pittham both hit unbeaten 50s as Goring (137-2) beat Pagham (135 all out).

Aldwick v Rustington

Sussex League Div 6

On a miserable May day blighted with rain, Aldwick started their league season by coming up against Paddy Chapman, who hit an unbeaten 151 for Rustington to enable his side to end on 282-9. Aldwick had removed openers Ben West (10) and William Palmer (9) early and the visitors were struggling at 31-3 but from 90-4, Chapman figured in a 135-run partnership with Spencer Morris ( 36 ) that took his side to 225-5.

Richard Hobbs (29) offered further support despite the bowling of Ben Bambridge (3-65) , Ian Horner (2-30) and Matt Tozer (2-44).

Aldwick’s run chase soon capitulated with openers Liam Tinson (14) and Mark Lester (5) out early, followed quickly by Aiden Mills (3) mainly through Glen Lovesgrove’s bowling efforts (3-14). A late cameo from skipper Ben Bambridge (24*) took the total to 88 all out but it was a disappointing start.

This weekend Aldwick host Steyning II.

West Wittering 1st XI hosted the relegated Horsham twos in the opening Sussex League game. In overcast, cold and wet conditions, Horsham won the toss and opted to bat. Harry Staight (1-12 off six) & Joe Pink (4-30) claimed early wickets getting Wittering off to a flyer. They were ably supported by Joe Sissons (3-34) and Kieran Baker (2-12) who got the dangerman Captain Jonny Whiting out for 63. Horsham were all out for 117.

Wittering shuddered as James Munro was dismissed third ball for a duck, but Gareth Lendrum (58), Johnny Miller (23 not out) and Sam Caddy (25 not out) saw Wittering home for 30 points within 20 overs.

West Wittering v Aldwick

Opener Ed White (52*) showed his class before retiring in this friendly.

Good support came from Dion Sampson ( 37 ) and a personal best from Frankie Bigwood (23) but the rest of the batting line-up struggled especially against skipper Dom Daplyn who took 3-9 and helped restrict the visitors to 167 all out.

Wittering’s chase stumbled as Bigwood (2-36) removed both openers, Abdul Shop (21) and Ahmed Good (5) but the middle-order trio of Joseph Pink (24), Jack Allsobrook (50*) and Aaron Newman (25) saw their side home in the 26th over.

Jake Merrett (1-35) and Nathan Koakan (1-24) bagged a wicket apiece in a game that featured many youngsters.

Ashling v Walberton

Ashling CC, looking for their first win since August 2019, which was against Walberton, hosted them again and the visitors were put into bat on an unpredictable strip.

After a slow start, they reached a respectable 158/6 off their 35 overs.
