Cricket: Fernhurst’s fine season is celebrated

President John Mitchell emphasised the huge impact the club have had on the village, integrating with the community more than ever and increasing the buzz at the recreation ground on Saturday mornings with coaching.

The junior section has grown to almost 100 and under the superb leadership of Rob Unwin has played competitive matches at a number of age levels. Next summer they will enter competitive leagues.

Wills Kellett won the award for best junior and Ed Vass was named most improved player across the club.

The Unwin family won the Clubman Award for running the junior sSection so well.

In the adult section, the Saturday X1 finished a very close fourth in division three of the I’Anson League. Tristan Rissik took an exceptional 72 league wickets, thought possibly to be a record. Ryan Lewis collected 441 runs while Mike Allen took the most catches with 13.

Rissik was the player’s player and man-of-the-match awards. Steve Tytler gained the captain’s award but Jon Meier accepted the less-prestigious Donald Duck award.

The Sunday X1 with a squad of more than 40 played a full season, even lending players to visiting teams to make for competitive games. Matt Field won the prize for best batting average, Mukesh Chacha Sharma for best bowling and Liam Harding for most catches.

Work behind the scenes included a very successful race night, a stall at the Revels for the first time for many years, Donk’s Cafe every Saturday morning producing wonderful bacon butties for all callers and, last but not least, one of the best wickets in the area produced by hours of work by John and Mike Allen.
