Pagham v Middleton

Sussex League division two

The clash of bottom-versus-top went with the formbook as Pagham entertained Middleton at Nyetimber Lane.

Sean Heather, the Middleton captain, won the toss and without hesitation invited Pagham to bat first.

Middleton made early inroads with opening bowlers Matt Cooke and Tommy Davies taking early wickets. At 14 for three Pagham needed someone to occupy the crease and for a while overseas player Eranga Dissangge and Ian Dyer did just that for their side.

They shared a partnership of 49 before Jamie Thompson, who had been introduced into the attack to replace Cooke, bowled Dyer for 24.

Resistance came from a number of Pagham batsmen all looking to provide support to Dissangge.

Pagham managed to end their innings just nine wickets down with Dissangge 90 not out in a total of 163. Only two other batsmen Billy Turner-Hogg (14) and Peter Cotterill (12) got into double figures.

For Middleton the wickets were spread among their bowlers with two apiece for Davies, Thompson and Matt Reynolds.

In reply, opening together for the first time this season, Will Burrows and Beck Hemingway got their side off to a perfect start, sharing a stand of 80 before Hemingway was first out, bowled by Thomas Kent for 40.

Burrows was joined at the crease by skipper Sean Heather and the pair shared another good partnership of 65 before Heather was dismissed to a superb catch at slip by Dyer with his score on 43.

There were no further Middleton wickets to fall and they reached their target of 164 with just two wickets down with Burrows 67 not out.

This weekend league leaders Middleton have a double header at home against St James on Saturday and Guernsey on Sunday, both starting at 1pm.

St James v Bognor

Sussex League division two

Bognor started the second half of the 2016 season in disappointing fashion, losing by three wickets to St James.

Batting first, Bognor lost early wickets, and despite 32 from Max Ashmore, they struggled to gain momentum.

It took a quick 37 from Graham Bush at number nine to drag the away side up to 146 all out, Sam Rattle the pick for St James with 4-32.

The home side also lost early wickets in their reply but Bognor could not find the killer blow, and a decent partnership between Hector Loughton and Michael Murray, off the back of 42 from Alex Davies, saw St James over the line, despite Bush adding to his runs with 3-56.

Bognor 2nd XI v Henfield 2nd XI

2nd XI Div 3 West

Bognor won the toss and elected to field and the decision from skipper Rich Cox looked a good one as the veteran bagged two early wickets.

Henfield skipper Peter Boyce batted well to make 55 before Tanya Wake nipped in to claim his wicket on her way to three for 20.

A decent bowling display by the home team held Henfield to 185 for six with the prospect of a positive run chase in the offing.

A fine start for Bognor was given by veteran pairing of Mark Woolnough and Iain Ashmore, who put on 57 for the first wicket.

However, a bad dream ensued as all the following batsmen got themselves in and out to Henfield’s Jordon Smith, who bagged seven for 49. With Malcolm Davies grabbing three for 42, Bognor were bowled out for 135, Henfield winning by 52 runs.
