Pagham pip Worthing ... Wittering winners ... Rustington roar

Worthing v Pagham

On a day of intermittent drizzle Worthing won the toss and batted first in a match reduced to 36 overs each.

Michael Gould and Harry Dunn made a good start, reaching 35 before Dunn was lbw to Pete Cotterill.

Two more quick wickets fell before Jay Mahesh decided to try to hit a boundary off every ball and soon got to 34 when he was caught off Nick Smith.

Gould continued to hold the innings together before he was out for 60, leaving Worthing 104-5.

Worthing managed to reach a respectful 176-6 in 33rd over when the umpires came off for rain and that ended up being the end of the innings. When the players where able to return, Pagham were left with 30 overs to get 166. Another early wicket saw Smith at the crease early on.

Pagham made a slow start and at points where behind the required rate if the game was to be called off but a good partnership between Ryan Barratt (18) and Smith (45) saw them back up with the rate and cruising to victory.

Two quick wickets put Worthing back on top but an inspired Wayne Green hit a lusty 34 and solid knock of 31 not out from Gareth Davies saw Pagham home in the last over.

West Wittering v Worthing 2nd

With the game reduced to 36 overs following rain, West Wittering were put into bat by Worthing on what looked a damp, seamer-friendly wicket. Samuel Caddy (18) was able to see off the new ball before being caught behind off the bowling of the George Hannington-Hodge (1-50). Johnny Miller (110) cashed in and score a chanceless run-a-ball ton.

Ably supported by Matt Burgess (21) and William Grant (17), Miller’s innings was characterised by sumptuous drives and three towering sixes over mid-wicket. He was eventually bowled by the miserly Shane Fetlon (1-23) but a late flurry from Rob Gray (23) took West Wittering’s total to 243-5.

In response, Worthing were reduced to 17-2 after two early wickets from Jack Harte (2-24).

Glenn Harris (2) tried to play positively but skied a pull shot for an easy catch, before Josh Goldsmith was caught sharply by keeper Will Grant diving low to his right.

Harry Staight (1-18) held up an end before he broke down with an injury. With the run rate climbing, Worthing looked to press the accelerator. Joshua Hyde (28) and Gavin Miles (17) showed good touch, but Samuel Caddy (2-19), Joseph Pink (2-14) and Nicholas Fitzgerald (2-26) took regular wickets at regular intervals to limit Worthing to 137-9.

Pagham 2nd v Aldwick

Despite the weather, the two teams produced an enjoyable match.

Aldwick decided to bat and, as the previous week, they put on 65 for the first wicket.

Alex Cooper (42) and Andy Smith (44), with the help of Dean Stokes (12) took the score to 110-2. After that the batsman scored seven between them with the highest score being four as Aldwick were bowled out for 133.

Pagham shared the wickets, with Danny Berkley taking 3-39, and Thomas Kent, Ben Barker and Sam Mason backing him up with two wickets each.

Sam Mason (37*) top scored for Pagham. He was backed up by T Kent (24), Dan Berkley (17) and Chris Hayden (16) as Pagham got home by four wickets with 15 overs in hand.

The highlight of Aldwick’s fielding was two magnificent catches taken by Dion Sampson as gully. Jamie Murphy’s 3-35 led the way well backed up by Ben Bambridge’s 2-36.

Hero of the day was Vikki Mackay the Pagham scorer – she not only did the scorebook, putting the score live straight on to Playcricket, but also had to operate the electric scoreboard.

Rustington 2nd v West Wittering 2nd

Wittering skipper Kieran Baker elected to bat and Mark Taylor and Will Finch looked in good nick until an early wicket tumbled, that of Taylor (4).

Matt Ward (0) and Billy Bowman (1) lost their wickets early and it was 12-3 when Zach Stewart came into bat.

Stewart (13) Simon Lowther (0) and Kev Allsobrook (19) were out, the latter while trying to pass 2000 runs for the club.

Max Meyohas (3), Baker (0), and Owen Evans (0) were out cheaply, but a solid knock from Finch (41*) meant West Wittering finished on 99 all out.

Rustington lost a few early wickets and tight overs from Baker (0-33) and Allsobrook (2-14) preceded Stewart (1-29) and Ward (2-19) taking essential wickets. Manyold (60) was out when the scores were tied. but Pane (1*) hit the winning run.

Goodwood v London New Zealanders

Rain ruined an afternoon on which umpire Bryan Tomalin was the centre of his attention.

It was his 100th game at Goodwood as an official – coincidentally London New Zealanders were also the opposition for his first.

Before the game he was presented with a framed copy of the 1727 rules of cricket.

Some good work on the adjacent strip by the assembled teams meant the game got under way with only a short delay.

Johnny Heaven and Owen Spicer opened the batting for Goodwood – but rain meant an early halt just after he was out in the third over.

He had little goodwill left as he returned to his seat, passed by people running to put the covers on.
