Darts: Blackwood takes Benevolent Cup

The Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League's Benevolent Cup knockout was held at Newtown Social Club, with 47 players in attendance.

Preliminary matches saw great darts including a 180 from Lee Franklin (POW ‘Z’) and there were more maximums from Mark R Todd (BRSA Ravens), reigning champion Gary Blackwood (Claremont) and former champion Graeme Dutton (Squash Club) in the first round and Dave Wingate (Friary ‘D’) in the second round.

The first semi-final pitted Andy Chant (Four Chesnuts) against Richard Pennells (Jacks Jokers).

Chant was really up for the knockout and found form by taking the first leg. The second leg saw Chant hit three scores of 81 but Pennells took the leg. The last leg saw Pennells score two tons, but more consistent scoring from Chant saw him go through.

The second semi-final was between Blackwood and Franklin. Franklin took the first leg but Blackwood started the second leg with 100, and followed it with 121 and 100 to help him take the leg.

The last leg saw Blackwood start with a 100 and soon after get another ton and two scores of 95 on his way to his fourth Benevolent Cup final.

The final started with Blackwood winning nearest the bull but Chant started with a ton and hit another on his third throw. Blackwood had the lead until Chant hit 123. Chant eventually took the first leg with double three.

The second leg saw Blackwood get off to the better start but Chant wasn’t far behind.

With 114 left, Chant ended up leaving himself with three.

Blackwood had 78 left and got it, hitting single 18, single 20 and double top for the second leg.

In the deciding leg Blackwood had 128 left and hit treble 20, another treble 20, but missed the double four. Chant couldn’t catch up and Blackwood took only two more darts to find double two for the match, taking the Benevolent Cup for the third year on the trot.
