Falcons set for flying start as softball team forms in Chichester

Chichester Falcons Softball Club were formed in the spring following the success of the St Richard's Hospital x-ray department team The Rays in a local tournament.

Team coach James Wheeler (right) saw the potential in the players and has kept the team – named after Chichester’s most famous avian inhabitants – training regularly while also recruiting throughout the summer.

Drawing on the experience of players from the Solent League in Portsmouth, as well as the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Japan, the Falcons have been accepted into an indoor winter league starting in November.

“I’m hoping the Falcons are going to get off to a flying start in the league,” said Wheeler.

“We’ve played Solent League opposition in the summer and I think we’ll give the more established teams a shock.”

The Falcons are still on the lookout for new recruits to bolster the fledgling squad.

“Softball is a mixed sport so men and women of any age can play for the Falcons.

“We even have two married couples in the team, which makes for a great atmosphere at training and matches,” Wheeler added.

Anyone interested should check out the Chichester Falcons Facebook group or go to Oaklands Park next to the theatre at 6pm on Wednesdays.
