For the Chichester Fencing Club rising-star foilist, the honour came hot on the heels of his Sussex Open championship Victory,

The Budapest competition is one of a series where every fencing country in the world sends their top young fencers to compete against each other over the season, all hoping to secure places both at the next international in Vienna, Austria, as well as the forthcoming European and World Championships.

More than 200 young men competed in the foil event in Budapest, the Americans and Russians both fielding enormous teams of 20 fencers.

After the poule stage of the event, where fencers compete against five or six others to achieve an overall seeding, the direct elimination part ensues, with a win advancing the competitor to the next round and a loss resulting in an early flight home.

All the British men were knocked out in the last 128 except two, one of whom was Jolley.

He went on to finish in 25th place out of 256 competitors with no other British man finishing anywhere near him.

In fact, his was by far the best result in both the cadets and even the junior competitions, showing just how much he deserves his No1 British ranking.

This wonderfully-exciting result immediately guaranteed his selection for the next international competitions to be held in Vienna and Cabries, France.

His Chichester coaches said it was an exceptional and richly deserved result for an exceptionally talented and dedicated young man.
