Charity begins at home for Selsey as they take revenge over Chichester

Chichester were left to rue spurned opportunities as they slipped to a 1-0 loss at Selsey in the RUR Charity Cup second round.

Having fallen to a home defeat to Chichester earlier this season, Selsey inflicted revenge courtesy of Jake Goulding’s first-half strike.

Frustrated City boss Adie Girdler said: “They had a spell for 15 or 20 minutes in the first half, but then we got going and we had some good chances, which we should have scored. Lewis Edwards missed two chances. In the second half we battered them. It’s just a shame we didn’t get anything out of the game.

“We created good chances, played some good football, and looked like a far better side.”

The solitary goal came on 16 minutes when Goulding dispatched a shot past keeper Matt Short. Tenacious work by the mercurial Ruben French allowed him to find space and compose himself before netting.

It was one of few chances Selsey conjured, with the visitors growing stronger and dominating possession.

On 28 minutes Edwards skipped past the Selsey defence only to miscue his shot into the grateful hands of keeper Sam Joyce.

City’s growth in stature was evident after the interval, with the hosts on the ropes.

The visitors passed up numerous opportunities to equalise and Selsey held on for another valuable victory under Adam Hinshelwood.

Selsey’s reward is an outing to Westfield in the third round and they travel to East Grinstead in the league on Saturday, when City travel to Lingfield – also in the league.
