Chichester take first league win - Selsey turn attention to FA Cup

Adie Girdler toasted Chichester's first league win of the season after they won at the home of ten-man Selsey in division one of the Sussex League.

Captain Michael Turvey’s solitary strike on 65 minutes was enough to ensure City left with all three points, completing successive wins for the first time this season.

Selsey struggled to contain City’s domination for long spells and were not helped when keeper Sam Joyce was harshly dismissed for handling outside his box after failing to avoid a powerful header back to him by his own defender.

City boss Adie Girdler praised his side’s hard-working performance and is eagerly anticipating Saturday’s John O’Hara cup tie away to Little Common.

Girdler said: “I think we dominated, but we didn’t play as well as we can. They made it difficult and tried not to give us too much space to play in.

“It was a well-worked goal, which was pleasing, but we had plenty of pressure on them, and perhaps we should have had a few more goals with the amount of pressure.

“We defended as a unit, worked hard and we defended from the front as well. We worked a lot harder as a team and had a bit more organisation.

“That’s now two wins on the bounce and we’ll take that. Obviously you want to win in every game you play.”

Girlder also praised City’s youngsters for the roles they played in Tuesday’s win and is excited by how his new-look side is taking shape.

He added: “Louis Edwards stuck a nice ball in for the goal, and Turvs finished it well. Josh Garvey and Harry Gilbert worked hard.

“Everybody equally worked hard. But despite all the pressure we had, the keeper Matt Short pulled off a couple of good saves.”

For Selsey, it was a second defeat in the league in four days. Last Saturday they lost 3-1 at Crowborough after Joss Parsons had put them ahead.

They can put their league woes behind them with Saturday’s FA Cup preliminary-round tie at Erith & Belvedere.
