It was a pathetic performance for the second-successive match from Guy Whittingham’s men, who followed up the Newport loss with another abject showing.

On Saturday it was a 4-0 defeat at Kingsmeadow which provided the latest unacceptable display, with the away following booing at the final whistle.

And skipper Ertl was offering no excuses for the team once against letting down the supporters.

He said: ’I am really disappointed and there is no excuse for that result.

‘You have got to judge that (performance) and we have conceded four goals.

‘Everybody has got to look at himself and think what can I do better, can I improve and work better.

‘It is down to us players to make a response – that’s the important thing – and we know what we have to do in training.

‘I feel awful. Before the game I had a good feeling and thought it would be a good response to the last game but it didn’t turn out like that.

‘We were 1-0 down and still in the game. In the second half we had a good spell but conceded goals and we have got to stop conceding goals.

‘Everybody was obviously disappointed but we have got to put things right, we have got to tick it off and look forward.

‘The response to York was great. We worked really hard and after that we were a few games unbeaten.

‘We have got to work on that, every one of us, demand it from each other and get a response.’

Pompey remain in 16th after their fifth league defeat.
