Blues boss Paul Cook pointed out how the likes of Joe Hart and Jack Butland benefited from similar moves.

And he has no doubt the 19-year-old can use his time at Pompey as a platform to kick-start his career in similar fashion.

Cook said: ‘It’s great experience.

‘It was a great debut for Ryan against Oxford in front of that crowd.

‘In years to come, he’s going to be a good goalkeeper.

‘The important thing for him is the initial stages of learning.

‘Jack Butland, Joe Hart and great keepers like them all had spells out on loan.

‘It’s important nowadays for our young players to be playing right the way through the game.

‘One of the problems I find with young lads is they are happy not to play.

‘No matter what level you play at, playing regularly will improve you.

‘I’m sure he’s now looking forward to another big occasion. The more games you play in and the more you play at places like Fratton Park, the more you enjoy it.’
