The centre-back spent half of last season at Nyewood Lane on loan from Havant & Waterlooville and has now put pen to paper on a permanent Rocks deal.

Despite receiving offers from higher up the footballing pyramid, Cook chose Bognor as he felt the club’s brand of football would enable him to play his natural game.

“Robbie [Blake] was a big factor in me signing. I know how Bognor want to play and I feel as though that suits me. I understand their system and I think it’s a good deal for everyone,” Cook said.

While strength and physicality are important commodities in non-league, Blake likes his centre-backs to play out from the back and demonstrate composure on the ball. And Cook’s experience in midfield has made him confident in possession.

“I played as a central midfielder at Bournemouth academy until I was 16 years old. Then, after going to a trial day at Sheffield Wednesday, I was told I’d make a good centre back, so I went there as a scholar for two years. I’ve been playing there ever since, and it’s helped me to be comfortable on the ball and understand different positions,” he explained.

Cook is eager to develop his game so he can play pro football when the time is right. Despite receiving a minor setback with his release from Havant,

Cook felt Bognor offered a better platform for him to grow than certain sides in National South.

“I was approached by Bognor the day after Havant announced I wasn’t on their retained list. I was instantly attracted to the deal because I was familiar with the coaching staff, but I guess the process was drawn out with offers on the table from other clubs,” he said.

“I feel as though I could have gone to a National South team, but I thought I’d rather play with Bognor as I really enjoyed playing here last season and can be an important part of the team.”

Helping the team notch 15 wins in his 21 appearances at Nyewood Lane last campaign, Cook established a solid partnership with Keaton Wood and helped rectify the defensive struggles Bognor had at the beginning of the season.

Cook is set to feature when Bognor go to Chichester City in a friendly tomorrow evening.
