Lavant ease to victory over Pirates

Lavant were fortunate their hosts Nyetimber Pirates had secured the all-weather surface at Arun Leisure Centre '“ and they took full advantage, running out emphatic 5-0 winners in a West Sussex League premier-division clash.

Lavant set out to stretch their hosts at every opportunity with wide men Peter Caveney and Aaron Hancock taking full advantage of the exceptional distribution from Matt Lyttle at centre-half.

Ten minutes in, Lavant took the lead with Caveney getting the better of his full-back, driving into the box and firing a low left-footed cross via a few deflections into the net.

The Pirates were unlucky not to find themselves level on a number of occasions but resolute defending and a little luck saw Lavant weather the storm.

Lavant doubled their lead when a Hancock corner found James Sandford at the back post to power in his free header.

Caveney, Hancock and Dan Baker had further opportunities before the close of the half.

After the break, Lee Smith was on for the injured Caveney and saw several long-range efforts easily gathered by the Pirates stopper.

Sandford bagged his second with an audacious long-range effort that sailed into the top corner with the keeper rooted.

Sandford wasn’t done – he was on the scoresheet again to complete his hat-trick as another deflection helped the ball on its way in.

Lavant finished their rout as man of the match Baker got his reward for working tirelessly up front, heading in Hancock’s smart centre.

The remaining minutes were played with Sandford in between the sticks after keeper Neil Sanson had to go off injured – and the hat-trick hero managed to preserve a deserved clean sheet.
