Lions' vision is for a rise to the Ryman League

Pagham supremos Brent Williams and Carl Stabler have unveiled an ambitious blueprint to thrust the Lions to a new level on and off the pitch.

Chairman Williams, manager Stabler and the committee are convinced they can sustain football at a higher standard and would relish the chance to leap into the Ryman League next season if they can gain promotion.

Stabler’s side are flying high in the Sussex League’s top flight but the boss knows there is a long season ahead.

He said: “We’re not saying it isn’t going to be difficult – there are some decent teams in the league and we’re all fighting for the same prize.

“We’ve had a great start and we want to build on that.

“But that doesn’t detract from our long-term focus to take the club to the next level, be it this season or thereafter.

“Our vision is to play our football in the Ryman sooner rather than later.

“We’ve attracted players of a high quality for this campaign and our recruitment of top-class players doesn’t end there.

“We’re happy with the squad as we speak but we’re constantly monitoring the situation and when the right calibre of player becomes available we’ll consider adding personnel. You can’t have enough good players.”

Stabler recognises the mouth-watering opportunity to meet neighbours the Rocks if Pagham go up and the Rocks fail to gain promotion.

He added: “We wish the Rocks all the best in their bid for promotion after narrowly missing out last time. But if we were to meet it would be tremendously exciting for the town but there are so many factors to consider before that can happen.”

It is perhaps off the pitch where the Lions are making bigger strides. Stabler and Williams and the hard-working committee have overseen summer improvements at Nyetimber Lane, and plans are in place to add a 200-seater stand should the team win promotion.

“The ground isn’t far off being ready to comply with standards required for Ryman League football and we have the plans in place to be given the green light,” said Williams.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to many Pagham people who have worked tirelessly to get us where we are. The pitch has been improved, we have a strong and proactive committee and there is a certain amount of funding in place.”

Pagham would still welcome new investment and have exciting sponsorship plans afoot.

“We’re considering offering naming rights to the ground and we have initial interest from local companies. It’s a work in progress and we’d be happy to talk to interested parties. We have unfulfilled potential and can offer a mutually beneficial partnership.

“There’s a very positive attitude through the club from the vibrant youth team, to the reserves and the first team. Hospitality is top notch – we won ‘best hospitality in the league’ last season.”
