VIDEO: Pirates take the Sussex Junior Cup loot

NYETIMBER Pirates withstood a second-half comeback from South Coast City to win the Sussex Bluefin Junior Challenge Cup at Culver Road, Lancing.

Pirates eased into a 3-0 half-time lead and, although City hit back with a second half salvo, they were unable to complete the turnaround.

They took the lead on six minutes after James Fallick went down under a challenge and Phil Turner slotted home from 12 yards.

They seemingly put the game beyond doubt with a quick-fire double inside a minute.

First, Andy Cox ran through and fired in unchallenged across the keeper and then Anders Wyatt played in Turner who lashed home the third almost immediately.

The second half proved to be a much more even affair, and City pulled a goal back to give themselves hope on 54 minutes.

Daniel Shrubb challenged Pirates keeper Warren Pye under a high ball, and the rebound fell to Ben Stonham who snaffled up the loose ball from close range.

City did manage to reduce the deficit further in the very last minute of stoppage time as Stonham crossed for Will Sillsby to head in from eight yards, but it was too little too late and the Pirates held out.

Pirates manager Charlie Welling said: “It’s a prestigious cup to win, some big teams have won it in the past so it’s very pleasing and we had to work hard for it as no cup is ever easy to win.”

PIRATES: Pye; Williamson, Dobbs, Bann, Gill; Cox, Peach, D Towers, Wyatt; Turner, Fallick. Subs: Carter (Dobbs 66), Frangou (Williamson 76), Dant (Wyatt 90), Walter.
