Marc McNulty: I would love Pompey return

The striker has rejoined parent club Sheffield United at the end of a loan spell which saw him finish as the Blues’ top-scorer.

He netted 12 times in 34 appearances, most recently in the play-off semi-final first leg against Plymouth.

McNulty reunites with a Bramall Lane set-up now headed by Chris Wilder following the dismissal of manager Nigel Adkins earlier this month.

Assistant boss Alan Knill has contacted the 23-year-old to provide assurances he has a Blades future.

The Scot, who has 12 months remaining on his contract, will link-up with the League One club for pre-season training.

Yet he would relish the chance for a Fratton Park switch.

He told The News: ‘As far as I know, I am a Sheffield United player and have another year on my contract.

‘When the window opens things may change and people may enquire about me, but at this moment in time I am with Sheffield United.

‘Obviously the manager who sent me out on loan is no longer there and Chris Wilder has come from Northampton so knows a lot about Pompey and would have seen me play.

‘Alan Knill rang me and told me they want me to be part of their plans.

‘We had a quick chat and as far as I know they want me back for pre-season and playing for the club.

‘Things can change very quickly, but I have a year left on my contract and need to be there for pre-season and we’ll take it from there.

‘The question everyone has asked is if I would want to come back to Pompey and I would be lying if I said no.

‘I have absolutely loved it there and it has been a privilege to play for them.

‘I jumped at the chance to join on loan. As soon as I came down I could see the club was special, I have loved my time.

‘But I just need to focus on being a Sheffield United player at the minute and see what happens over the summer.

‘People’s opinions may change and I will take it from there.’

McNulty established himself as a popular figure among the Fratton faithful during his stay.

His 12-goal haul included a hat-trick in the November 6-0 demolition of York.

And the striker has enjoyed his time on the south coast.

He added: ‘I cannot speak highly enough of the club, coming down has opened my eyes. It is surreal how good the fans are home and away.

‘It is a fantastic club in general, from the chairman to Mark Catlin, the gaffer and his coaching staff to all the people around the club.

‘There is also a really tightly-knit group of players and it is all in place to take off.

‘Going back to League Two wouldn’t bother me, the most important thing is to play football.’
