Midhurst's hopes are lanced by Lancing

Meeting the league leaders was something Midhurst didn't relish '“ and a 4-1 win for Lancing at Rotherfield showed why.

Once again Midhurst were forced to bring in players from the reserves.

Regular supporters were anticipating a one-sided game but it wasn’t, although Lancing were not slow in opening the scoring.

Ten minutes had elapsed when the referee pulled up Adam Exall for a foul and the free-kick from Richard Hudson gave keeper Paul Williamson no chance. Heads could have dropped at this but the reverse was true as Liam Dreckman met a pass from Lewis Hyde to make it 1-1.

Just when it seemed the makeshift side were getting to grips with Lancing, Lee Garnham met a well-directed pass and restored the visitors’ lead.

In the second half, Lancxing centre-forward Aaron McMillan exchanged comments with the referee and was booked. Later a second yellow saw him ordered off.

Reduced to ten, Lancing adopted a more defensive line-up. But Lee Garnham still netted number three.

Midhurst took off Lawrence Hyde and brought on Tom Elcock while Lancing replaced Dan Turner with James Witherspoon.

Midhurst looked capable of reducing the deficit but Witherspoon rocked Midhurst back on their heels with Lancing’s fourth.

Things didn’t get much better for Trevor Waller’s team on Easter Monday when they went down 2-0 at Loxwood.

Midhurst seconds drew 3-3 at home to Loxwood with goals from Harry Challen and Tom Elcock (2).
