Pompey striker joins Shrews

Luke Rodgers' departure from Pompey has been confirmed after he agreed a loan deal with Shrewsbury Town.

The diminutive striker has initially joined the Blues’ League One rivals on a month’s loan but will sign permanently until the end of the season when the transfer window opens in January.

The 30-year-old, who scored three goals in 13 appearances for Pompey, left Fratton Park for the final time yesterday and announced he was leaving the club via Twitter.

And while Rotherham were also keen to sign him, he has opted to re-join his former club where he started his career.

Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner said: ‘Luke is a goalscorer who was a very popular character when he was at Shrewsbury first time.

‘Scoring goals has been a weakness for us and I just feel his movement and ability might spark something in the penalty area for us.’

Defender Josh Thompson will also join Colchester United in a similar arrangement.

The centre-back signed from Celtic at the start of the season but has fallen way down the pecking order in recent weeks.

That will leave caretaker boss Guys Whittingham with some vital space in his squad to bring in two new loan recruits.

But it seems unlikely that Whittingham will be able to bring in anyone in time for Saturday’s trip to Bury simply because of the lack of time.
