Pompey suffer Sky Blues blow

Pompey's hopes of a Great Escape took a hammer blow as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Coventry today.

Two second-half goals from Gary McSheffrey and Oliver Norwood did the damage at the Ricoh Arena.

The visitors had only themselves to blame for the loss as they passed up some decent chances against their fellow strugglers.

McSheffrey gave Coventry the lead 10 minutes after the restart with a smart finish and Norwood ended a flowing move with a powerful drive 13 minutes from time.

Pompey will look to a number of good opportunities not being taken as key to their downfall.

Joel Ward’s back-post header failed to work Joe Murphy from a first-half corner.

Luke Varney then stayed on his feet when clipped by the Sky Blues keeper before firing wide after 31 minutes.

The lively Chris Maguire went close with a dipping volley after the home side opened the scoring in the second-half.

He then saw a cracking free-kick come back off the post as Pompey pushed.

Luke Varney headed wide when he should have done better from Scott Allan’s free-kick with 18 minutes left.

That summed up Pompey’s day as they remain bottom of the Championship with eight games left.

The Blues are now six points from safety.
