Awford: New recruit gives us fire-power options

Paul McCallum has been recruited to add even more fire-power to the Pompey ranks.

Andy Awford insists none of his current strikers have been pushed down the pecking order with the addition of the 21-year-old from West Ham.

That means Matt Tubbs, Craig Westcarr and Ryan Taylor will all battle it out for their opportunities and nobody is seen as back-up or first choice.

The Blues boss said: ‘Most football clubs have four strikers and that’s what we’ve got.

‘We’ve also got Pat Agyemang and Tom Craddock in the mix.

‘There is no pecking order in terms of number one, number two, number three and number four.

‘It will be horses for courses.

‘We may play one up front in some games and we may have all four on at times.

‘The more you can have at your disposal, the better.’

McCallum was drafted in on loan for the remainder of the campaign but Awford declined to reveal if he would be thrown straight into the starting line-up.

The Blues boss, however, was keen to add more attacking options from the bench.

Awford said: ‘Paul gives us a few more options. He’s a big lad, he is 6ft 2in and gets in good areas.

‘You can play off him as he is a target striker but he works his socks off and he isn’t one of those players that doesn’t want to get his hands dirty.

‘He will have a go for you and I like him.

‘He is more of a Taylor than he is a Westcarr or a Tubbs.

‘His height lends itself to that as well.

‘He has got good attributes. He is young, fit, hungry and he is out of contract in the summer.

‘I don’t know whether West Ham will keep him or not but the lad has got a point to prove.

‘I’ve said I want as many options as I can have.

‘If he is not playing, he gives you that option from the bench.’

Awford added: ‘Taylor played up with Tubbs last Saturday and I thought Westcarr did well when he came on so we will have to see.’
