Sonny Bradley is confident Pompey will be firing on all cylinders come the start of the new season.

The Blues kick off a new era in League Two with the visit of Oxford United to Fratton Park on Saturday, August 3.

That is less than two weeks away, leaving the new-look Pompey side intensifying their efforts to ensure they are ready for a clash that is sure to cause a buzz among supporters desperate to experience the good times again.

Up to eight new players could make their league debuts for Guy Whittingham’s side in that game, with the manager undertaking a massive recruitment drive over the summer.

All were on show as Pompey continued their countdown to the season-opener with a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Championship side Charlton on Saturday.

The new boys are also likely to feature again in tonight’s friendly trip to Bournemouth, where Whittingham will be hoping to see further evidence of team-gelling and unity.

A week-long pre-season camp in Colchester helped the new-look squad develop an understanding on the pitch.

And defender Bradley, one of the new additions, believes they’ll all be playing in tune come kick-off on the opening day.

‘I think come the start of the season we’ll be ready, no matter what,’ said the 21-year-old. ‘There’s quite a few experienced players here, they know the basics and you can’t really go drastically wrong with that.

‘I don’t think you can look too much at the result from Saturday. I think the result is irrelevant

‘I think if you look at it, that was the first time we played a strong team and we’ve got a lot to work on, obviously.

‘But I think we can take a lot of positives of the game.

‘I think if we can take the positives out of the game we can build on them.

‘And looking at what I saw, I think it’s going to be a bright season.

‘Tonight’s game with Bournemouth will also be another good test and I’m sure we will be able to take a lot of positives from it as well.’

Bradley added that a steady improvement in team performances will also be evident as the campaign progresses.

‘From the start of the season to the end of it, we’ll always be learning as a team,’ said Bradley.

‘And I think it will be just a matter of a few weeks from now that we see real evidence of the team gelling.

‘We just need to get some technical things right, like set pieces.

‘But, like I say, as the season goes on, as a group of players we will develop.

‘And I think the performances will develop as they go along.’
