Ben Chorley is pencilled in to make his return from injury in today’s Pompey reserve game.

But only if the Furze Lane clash with Cambridge survives an early morning inspection.

Chorley has been absent from the Blues’ past nine matches, having been sidelined with a dead leg and then a calf problem.

The last of his five appearances so far this season was in the 1-0 Fratton Park defeat to Newport County on August 30.

Now the former skipper is on the comeback trail and will start against Cambridge today (2pm) in the next stage of his push for a first-team return.

Also featuring for a side to be taken by first-team coach Paul Hardyman will be Miles Storey and Andy Barcham.

Storey was recalled to the Pompey bench against Mansfield on Saturday, after Andy Awford had opted to leave him out of the previous three squads.

The Blues boss has spoken of his intention to boost the confidence of the loanee by working on him in training, although the striker did appear for the final five minutes in the 1-1 draw with the Stags.

Barcham has also been short of games of late, with his last start being the Capital One Cup defeat at Stoke in August.

The winger has instead been a regular off the bench, although was not named in Awford’s match-day 18 on Saturday.

Today’s squad also consists of Ben Close and Nick Awford, who started in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Northampton last week.

However, reserve skipper, Adam Webster, is out after damaging his knee during that same fixture – an injury which will require an operation.

Instead, the experienced Chorley will come in to partner regular selection Chad Field in the centre of Pompey’s defence.

With continuous heavy rain yesterday, an inspection is planned this morning before the Cambridge squad set off.

Blues officials are seeking to make an early call once they have assessed the state of the recently-laid pitch at the University of Portsmouth’s Langstone Campus.
