Tom Craddock is gunning to use his Fratton bow to barge his way into the strikers’ frame.
David Connolly and Patrick Agyemang are Pompey’s likely forward line for the beginning of the campaign – purely on the basis of last season’s displays.
The deadly double act notched 10 goals between them – and have returned to the Blues on a permanent basis.
Now Craddock has bolstered a striking pool which also contains Ashley Harris, while Ryan Bird is also set to sign.
Former Middlesbrough man Craddock will start against Charlton tomorrow as boss Guy Whittingham continues to rotate his squad.
Having never played at Fratton Park before, Craddock’s striving to make quite an impact.
He said: ‘I’ve been on the bench there and warmed up but I’ve never managed to get on the pitch.
‘I didn’t start the other night against Braintree, so hopefully I can start tomorrow, especially if I can line up with David Connolly.
‘It would be good to get some minutes with him as we haven’t played together before.
‘I have been quite pleased with my pre-season so far. There have been three 45 minutes and one goal. If I can get another goal or two before the start of the season to try to stake a claim, then that would be great.
‘Obviously you’ve got Connors and Pat who were the first-choice players last season and it’s up to me to do my best in pre-season to try to break into that.
‘We’ve got different types of strikers and throughout the season there is going to be different needs for different games, so I think we are all going to get our fair share of games.
‘It is just up to us not to sulk if you are not in the team and to do your best in training every day.’
The 26-year-old Craddock has proven to be a prolific striker in the lower leagues throughout his career.
And he is looking to show Pompey fans what he is capable of in front of goal.
He added: ‘My finishing has not been as good as I would have liked, even in training.
‘I was a little bit rusty yesterday morning.
‘But pre-season is about finding your feet and I am still trying to get to know the players and they are getting to know me.
‘Hopefully I can offer something different to the other strikers.’
