Michael Appleton is weighing up granting Johnny Ertl a return to his starting line-up.

The Austrian is pencilled in to replace the injured Darel Russell in central midfield at Yeovil tonight.

Ertl hasn’t started a match since scoring the decisive own goal on his debut against Oldham more than a month ago.

His only appearance since was as a second-half substitute for Russell in Saturday’s victory over Scunthorpe.

With Russell expected to be sidelined for a minimum of three weeks with a hamstring pull, ex-Crystal Palace man Ertl is back in the frame.

And Appleton revealed the 29-year-old is ‘chomping at the bit’ to come back in to his plans.

He said: ‘Johnny has been training really well. I’ve been impressed and I’ve told him.

‘He’s certainly a lot sharper now than he was when he first walked into the club – and he’s got bags of experience.

‘He can play midfield, he can play centre-half, he can play right-back – similar to Darel.

‘I definitely would have no issues throwing him into the centre of the park tonight.

‘I thought he did well on Saturday. He made a couple of very intelligent runs and nearly got himself a goal with his first touch.

‘He has enough experience to be able to go into the middle of the park, regardless of whether he has had much football or not recently.

‘I would like to think he is ready to start a match because he is chomping at the bit after watching a lot of football recently.’

Josh Thompson (ankle) and Luke Rodgers (thigh) join Russell on the sidelines for tonight’s match. Gabor Gyepes (ankle) should start after managing to train yesterday.
