Guy: Contrasting wingers can have Pompey impact

Pompey have snapped up their second winger of the summer to add a missing ingredient to last season’s squad.

But Guy Whittingham believes recent recruit Ricky Holmes offers a contrasting style to fellow new-boy Andy Barcham.

The former Barnet man signed a two-year deal on Friday, ending a long-running pursuit from the Blues.

Naturally right-footed, he prefers to play on the left-hand side of midfield, although can play anywhere across the middle including behind the striker.

Similarly, Barcham, who joined on a three-year deal last month, is a right-footed left winger.

Whittingham sees the pair operating on opposite flanks in his side and is convinced each will offer something different.

He said: ‘It’s great to have Ricky on board.

‘He can create chances for the players we have got here attacking-wise.

‘He’s got a great attitude, can play left or right, has versatility and can go in behind if we have to use that system.

‘Ricky is more of a person who will take players on, as in manipulate the ball to get past players, a jinky winger if you like.

‘Whereas Barcham is more direct, he will push and go.

‘So, I think that is good for us having those two different types as well.

‘We changed the system a few times last season in games.

‘Predominantly everyone knows we are a 4-4-2 side.

‘But there are always ways of moving them around.

‘You just can’t have a player who is just right footed and plays on the right, or right footed and plays on the left and comes inside.

‘You have to keep defenders thinking all the time, so if you have got the ability to come inside and swap and go either way then I think you have got a good combination.

‘I think it is important to have that versatility.’

The arrival of Holmes takes Whittingham’s squad up to 17.

In addition, there are the five in the development group, including Jack Maloney and Nick Awford.

Maloney is also an option to play on the wing in the coming season, preferring to operate on the left-hand side.
