Jake Jervis was today training with Pompey ahead of a potential permanent deal.
The former Blues loanee has been without a club since leaving Turkish side Elazigspor in the summer, spending his time training with Sheffield United and Coventry.
Now Guy Whittingham has moved to snap up the 22-year-old ahead of other interest higher up the Football League.
However, Pompey are awaiting Uefa clearance before a deal can be completed, as they seek to have him available for Saturday’s visit of Exeter.
Jervis netted once in three matches while on loan at Pompey in December last year, the goal being a stunning strike at Tranmere.
Meanwhile, it is understood Ashley Harris is to complete a loan move to Chelmsford.
The Skrill South side lost to Gosport 2-1 last weekend, only Borough’s second victory of the season.
Dan Butler, also linked with a loan move away from Fratton Park, has joined Skrill Premier outfit Aldershot.
