It’s time to agonise and deliberate as the opportunity to choose your Pompey player of the season is here.

The News/Sports Mail is looking for somebody to present its coveted trophy to at the final home game of the season against Plymouth.

And we need the fans to help us by selecting their worthy candidate.

It has largely been a campaign to forget, but under Andy Awford it has proven to be an entertaining end.

Arguably some of the players are displaying their finest season’s form at present, putting them firmly in the frame for consideration.

Johnny Ertl was the convincing winner last year following his storming end to the campaign under Guy Whittingham.

This time around 40 players have been used and The News has selected six leading candidates for readers to give their Player of the Season vote to.

At present you can e-mail your choice to sport@thenews.co.uk

It will soon also be open to a text vote, with more details at a later date.

Those frontrunners include Jed Wallace, who has made 46 appearances so far, missing only two matches.

The attacking midfielder is currently the Blues’ top-scorer with seven goals, none of which have been penalties.

Ricky Holmes has emerged as the assist king whether from open play or dead-ball situations.

He currently has eight league assists and netted twice in 43 appearances.

Trevor Carson has solved Pompey’s goalkeeping headache during a Bury loan spell.

The 26-year-old has proven to be a reliable presence with excellent shot-stopping capabilities.

Crowd favourite Patrick Agyemang was a regular in the first half of the season and has netted five times.

His strong running and ability to maintain possession of the ball have also seen him regularly used off the bench.

Wes Fogden has been an impressive performer since arriving at the turn of the year, providing superb work-rate and some key performances.

Finally, the unflappable Nicky Shorey has featured 19 times, being a highly-reliable performer in his time at the Blues.
