Seventeenth place doesn't tell half the story for satisfied Selsey

Selsey finished 17th in division one of the Sussex League after a 3-1 defeat to high-flying Peacehaven at the High Street Ground.

Yet Ian Martin’s side have rarely flirted with the bottom three and finish 13 points above Shoreham.

Martin felt Peacehaven showed their class and said: “With our resources we’re doing a good job of being competitive.

“We were up against another top side. We were always in the game but they’re a well-organised side with good players.

“We just haven’t got the quality these top teams have. They convert good play into goals.”

Adam Kneller notched the visitors’ first four minutes before the break, but Sean Dobbs equalised two minutes after the restart. But two goals in four minutes later in the half from Craig Bunch and Ryan Bradley sealed Selsey’s 20th defeat of the season.

Martin said the season had been positive, with the mission of securing first-division status achieved.

He said: “On the football front our objective was to not get relegated through the points system so it’s objective met.

“It’s a long road of progression – in this first season we’ve reached the first checkpoint.

“If we can be ten to 15 points better off, and do that year after year, we’re moving in the right direction.”

The manager said he expected new additions in the summer – ‘creative players at the top end of the pitch’ – and doesn’t foresee unwelcome interest in his players.
