Ringmer came into the contest having failed to win a league match for more than two months, and their negative tactics took a long while for City to finally break down.

The closest to a goal during the first half was on 43 minutes when Ringmer’s Jordan Stubbins broke away and cut in from a tight angle, but the ball went wide of the far post with Anthony Ender beaten.

After the break, City got down to business and the ball was perfectly cued up for Dan Hegarty, but his thumping shot was cleared away for a corner.

Around the 70-minute mark there was intense pressure around the Ringmer goal with numerous City corners gained, but none of the chances were converted.

Out of nowhere in the 76th minute came a cracker of a goal to break the deadlock. A long clearance from keeper Ender found Michael Frangou wide on the right and, rather than deliver a cross, he let rip with an unstoppable missile into the corner of the net that left spectators gasping.

Ringmer instantly started attacking and drew level almost immediately when Jacob Shelton swung the ball into the goalmouth for the unmarked Seb Saunders to pop it over the line from close range.

But in the 85th minute a City throw-in on the left was delivered into a packed penalty area and Graham Bush produced an overhead bicycle kick to hit a superb goal and give City a 2-1 triumph.
