Striker's double means he's a Temple of doom for Selsey

Carl Stabler’s side set about their task in a thoroughly-professional way. Having won at East Grinstead on Saturday, the Lions were looking to keep momentum going at the end of a long and arduous season.

Selsey could have taken the lead but a possible handball in the Pagham area was waved away by the referee.

Matt Wood was looking awesome for Pagham, tying at least two of his markers in knots as the Lions went looking for the goal which would set them on their way.

Toby Pointon for Selsey could consider himself lucky to stay on the pitch let alone not booked as a succession of fouls seemed to escape the notice of the officials.

Temple’s 20th-minute shot on the turn was well dealt with by Sam Joyce, starting a Selsey attack which saw a shot come in from the right. Play swung back to Pagham and Scott Murfin’s shot from a Matt Wood cross went just wide of the upright.

Mark Lee struck an effort over the bar for Selsey.

The half-hour brought two chances for Pagham. The first rebounded off the post, but the second saw Jones add to his tally with a powerful header from a corner.

Pagham laid siege to Selsey’s goal, with Wood unlucky to be dispossessed at the last minute following a run into the area. Temple shot wide and the half ended on a controversial note as Lions skipper Daren Pearce was booked for something and nothing.

Five minutes into the second half, Pagham scored again. A right-sided ball in from Murfin was controlled by Justin Gregory and his pin-point cross to Temple saw the ball smacked past a diving Joyce.

Former Lion Edwin Bowers thought he was clear on goal on the hour, but a timely tackle from the excellent Joe Booker saw the chance curtailed. With another former Lion on the pitch as Blues assistant boss Sean Dobbs made an appearance, the home side’s defence became a little more assured.

Selsey sub Matthews had a decent shot saved by Wes Hallett as the ball rebounded off the post.

Pagham went close next, though, as Temple was adjudged offside from a Murfin flick-on. Bowers headed just wide for Selsey, while Murfin shot wide and then hit one at Joyce.

The third goal, when it came, was superb.

Great build-up work from Neil Murfin let Temple free, and his unstoppable shot was just reward for an excellent display from the Lions.
